Some people find snakes cool. Some people find them disgusting.
For the most part I fit into the latter
category. Snakes, in my opinion, are disgusting. Sometimes I’ll admit
they are kind of cool to look at, but mostly they gross me out.
While in South Dakota a few weeks ago I worked
up the courage to touch a big snake at a show at the Reptile Gardens,
located on the same road that leads to Mount Rushmore. Admittedly it
didn’t feel as disgusting as I believe snakes are. But seeing reptiles
in a zoo and learning about what they can do is totally different than
hearing or being affected by what they can do.
We need to have the utmost precautions around
dangerous animals, but before we jump to any drastic conclusions, we
need to have all of the facts.
On Monday, four-year-old Noah Barthe and his
six-year-old brother, Connor, were discovered dead in an apartment while
on a sleepover in Campbellton, N.B.

New test bench, wheelchair accessibility for curb cuts among items approved

The fire department will soon have a new Scott Test Bench.
"The Scott Test Bench is a required piece of equipment,” said deputy fire chief Rod Montgomery at Tuesday’s council meeting. “The history on it is it test all the self-contained breathing apparatus that we have in the fire department.”
The certification of the current test bench is expired. Under the approved 2013-2017 equipment reserve budget the fire department reserved $12,000 for the purchase of the new bench as a piece of major equipment.
According to a fire department report to council, between the tender dates of July 9 and July 26, the fire department received two tender responses. The lowest bid price was from Century Vallen of Regina for $12,345.34 plus taxes. The total purchasing price was $12,962.61.

Council discussses outstanding issues at length regarding the development

Councillors had mixed feelings regarding outstanding issues with the Civic Centre Plaza developer.
Following discussions, failed amendments, defeated motions and a passed motion, the majority of council voted to refer the motion from the July 22 executive committee meeting minutes back to executive committee.
The original motion was for council to grant city administration to “settle the potential liabilities with Civic Centre Plaza Inc. over the development for no greater than $150,000…”
It added the agreement would also include two water line connections, one sanitary storm sewer connection with a manhole, previously approved funds of $120,000 for the storm sewer and for the settlement to be funded from proceeds of the property sale at approximately $2.08 million.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Fewer complaints, more fire alarms in second quarter of 2013

The Moose Jaw Police Service handled fewer complaints so far in 2013 compared to 2012.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, council received the acting city manager’s city department quarterly reports for the second quarter of 2013 from April 1 to June 30.
Police have dealt with 7,799 complaints as of January compared to 8,250 in 2012.

A larger culvert will be installed in Spring Creek.
“In the previous two years this pathway and culvert has been eroding away and was replaced once already due to spring runoff,” said Kelly Mentanko, operations manager with the city at Tuesday’s executive committee meeting.
Executive committee voted in favour of proceeding with the culvert installation at a cost of $55,000. The funding will be split between two funds. The VLA parks dedication fund will provide two-thirds of the cost at $33,334 and the Westpark off-site levy fund will provide the remaining one-third at $16,666.

Repairs to 22 manholes and a storm sewer will take place immediately.
At Tuesday’s meeting the majority of council voted in favour of repairing the manholes and the storm sewer on the 900 block of Iroquois Street West at a total cost of $186,000.
“The 900 block Iroquois isn’t even on the five-year plan for storm sewer replacement. What this motion does is it immediately parachutes that project into No. 1 place,” said Coun. Brian Swanson. “Fair enough. It needs to be replaced immediately. The problem is that we’re only spending about half of what is needed on an annual basis for storm sewer replacement.”
According to director of engineering Ty Stokes’ report, in the five-year capital budget storm sewer replacement/upgrading project, there is funding of $185,000 with carry forward funding of $238,582 from the 2012 capital project. The total funding available under the project is $423,582.
