On Wednesday the Caribou West Pet Clinic has closed its doors for good.

"It's a selfish decision in some ways, but I think it's time to take care of myself," said owner and veterinarian Ann Vander Hooft. "It's been a 30-year career. It can be very demanding being on call 24 hours a day seven days a week. I still love being a veterinarian very much so, but running this practice is getting to be too much. It's just time to slow down."

“I am very happy that my dad signed me up for this camp because it’s really fun,” said participant Anna Maelde. “I like the field activities, but my most favourite part is all the food activities like the one that we did (Monday) morning with the pudding.”

So one section is going to be replaced with aluminum bleachers and we’re looking for tenders right now.”

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Lisa's Corner: Wolverine makes yet another screen appearance

By Lisa Goudy

Marvel comic book superhero Wolverine has seen a lot of screen time.

Made particularly famous by actor Hugh Jackman with the first X-Men movie released in 2000. Prior to that the character has and still does make many appearances on animated television shows.

Regarding Jackman’s portrayal of the fan-favourite mutant, he has appeared in four credited X-Men movies since 2000 and one un-credited cameo in X-Men: First Class.

And of course today marks the release of the movie The Wolverine. Next year Jackman will also appear as the character in X-Men: Days of Future Past. You have to wonder if moviemakers will ever stop making X-Men related movies.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Lisa's Corner: Stories shouldn’t sink with sunken ships

By Lisa Goudy

I’ve always had a fascination with sunken ships.

I really can’t explain why, but for whatever reasons the stories, photos and other information regarding sunken ships holds a particular allure for me. So of course I was genuinely interested to learn more about the Empress of Ireland at the travelling exhibit that was at the Moose Jaw Western Development Museum last weekend.

Of course sunken ships isn’t for everyone. Neither is history. But as Pascale Saint-Amand, project manager with the Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Per who was available to answer questions at the exhibit, pointed out you never know what old documents, artifacts and lists might come in handy. If you find something you should contact a museum to discuss it further.

Sharing stories from the past are important and they are intriguing to many people, as well as play a role in remembering our past to help shape our future. That’s why it’s imperative we keep telling our stories and, in the case of the news media, telling other people’s stories.

I’m thrilled to say I’ve shared what I believe to be a great story about the R.M.S. Titanic.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: New engineering director’s infrastructure experience a benefit

Higgins says it’ll take “a while to catch up” on infrastructure

By Lisa Goudy

Mayor Deb Higgins said it’s a “long-time coming” for a new director of engineering services.

“We all know that infrastructure is a huge issue here in the City of Moose Jaw, not only building out for new development but also rebuilding aging infrastructure within the core and older areas of the city,” said Higgins. “You know it’s a real challenge and to be able to have someone with (Tyron) Stokes’ experience come to the City of Moose Jaw I think is a plus for sure.”

She added the amount of resources, money available and where the money is committed is still central to infrastructure projects.

Performing traditional dances is a way to share aspects of other cultures.

That is the view of Bo Yu, a member of the Moose Jaw Chinese Association that performed at Motif on Sunday. When speaking about the Chinese square dance, she said it is a representation of the life of people in China.

“From the dance you can tell the horses are galloping in the grass,” said Yu. “Basically it’s about how people feel about our lives.”

The 39th annual festival concluded on Sunday in Happy Valley Park. Featuring 13 cultures this year, the event had entertainment, vendors and food on site over the weekend.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Lisa's Corner: Appreciate and enjoy our parks in and around the city

By Lisa Goudy

I was at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park for the first time this week.

I was impressed with the greenery, the lake, the pool and the beach. It was such a hot day, I’m sure if I hadn’t been covering something for work I would’ve jumped in the lake for a swim.

It’s definitely something we shouldn’t take for granted, just like Wakamow Valley and all of the other many parks in and nearby our city.

I’ve lived in Saskatchewan all my life and even while living in Regina, Buffalo Pound Provincial Park isn’t that far away.

Yet I’d never been to it before and there is one simple reason for it. I had a different park and lake I used to go to regularly and still do visit at least once a year.

Up until a couple of years ago, my grandparents owned a prestigious lakefront cabin at Lac Pelletier, which is approximately 30 kilometres south of Swift Current.

Hunger in Moose Jaw was one of six local non-profit agencies that shared a total of $37,669 in grants. A ceremony was held presenting the organizations with the cheques on Wednesday at the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery (MJMAG).

He added there would be a meeting sometime this week to discuss the challenge further and to prepare for the weekend festivities that begin Friday at 3 p.m.

Council overturned only one of executive’s decisions regarding possible multiplex enhancements.

During Monday’s meeting Coun. Brian Swanson requested a revote on executive committee’s decision to approve the proposed capital project enhancements at Mosaic Place and YaraCentre using the $1.5 million that council voted to return to the capital fund from the multiplex projects.

Each item was voted on separately at Swanson’s request. The five enhancements and the contingency on those projects were approved.

Council did, however, reverse executive’s decision to sole source Hockey Capital Moose Jaw Ltd. to complete the escalator, event power upgrade and rope lighting on the corporate box level. It will instead be tendered.

“It would be nice to hear some thoughts of the people that we serve,” said Mayor Deb Higgins. “Over the next few months we’re going to see a number of positions that are going to change and I think it gives us a good sense of the direction that we need to be going because we would be hearing from the people we represent and what their views are in the city.”

Sidewalk Days 2013 is off to a great start again this year. I had a lot of fun at last year’s festival. I liked listening to and watching various forms of entertainment. I loved the food and I enjoyed looking at all of the vendors and displays set up on Main Street.

Once again members of 15 Wing put on an air show on Thursday afternoon over downtown Moose Jaw and were available to the public for autographs following the show.

Bryan Van Tassel says city should act and not let water levels drop

By Lisa Goudy

Bryan Van Tassel remembers when there was a beach by the Moose Jaw River.

“My mom used to take me down there. There was a beach down there. There would be 300 people down there. It’s a marsh now,” said Van Tassel. “Somehow it is part of our heritage. We give old buildings better respect than we give the Moose Jaw River and there’s native history here. Tribes used to come here to meet in the wintertime.”

The owner of Boh’s Cycle and Sporting Goods said councillors haven’t shown enough care for the CPR dam and have allowed levels to drop.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Strange sightings in Moose Jaw skies

By Lisa Goudy

It was 10:45 p.m. on Saturday when local resident Inez White saw nine light orbs in the sky.

“I was just getting ready for bed. So I looked out the window and I saw all these lights in the sky and they were like a football field apart or maybe a little bit more,” she said. “They were all yellow and kind of orange and they were going not at a really fast speed but kind of in unison …. It was just the strangest thing I’ve ever seen.”

She added the orbs moved from east to west and turned north before disappearing. White, who lives in the complex at the end of Wolfe Avenue, said at first she saw six of them but then more came. She said it wasn’t a plane because there weren’t any red or green flashing lights visible.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: West Nile risk to increase by mid-July

Mosquitoes are out again, but so far nothing’s tested positive for West Nile virus.

“It’s somewhat of a guessing game (on the risk) until we start seeing positive mosquitoes,” said Dr. Mark Vooght, medical officer for the Five Hills Health Region. “Right now everyone is fully aware there are a lot of nuisance mosquitoes around, mosquitoes other than Culex tarsalis which is the most efficient at transmitting the West Nile virus organism to humans.”

He said the Culex tarsalis mosquitoes will feed more regularly and lay more eggs when the weather is hotter. He said those mosquitoes require the "right amount of heat” to thrive.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Lisa's Corner: Perspective can help us garner empathy

By Lisa Goudy

Sometimes we could all use some perspective.

It is impossible for anyone to know exactly what it’s like for someone else in his or her specific situation. We can’t know exactly what a person has gone through, is going through or will go through.

I think we need to recognize we have our differences and our experiences are uniquely ours by way of what happens or by how we choose to react to what happens.

While we can never truly know, perspective can help us try and understand and empathize with other people. For a lot of negative associations with someone’s situation, I believe we will be enlightened if we ourselves have experienced that.

For example unless we have experienced the kind of flooding such as in Alberta, we cannot possibly imagine what that’s like to lose everything because of a natural disaster.
