Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Lisa's Corner: What it means to be a diehard fan

By Lisa Goudy

When it’s a game that doesn’t matter, it’s fantastic to see a large crowd.

I am, of course, talking about baseball, but the same principle applies to other sports as well. Apart from being a diehard Saskatchewan Roughriders fan, I also cheer loud and proud for the Moose Jaw Miller Express. While I’m not a season ticket holder, I go to a few games each season and, no matter the weather of the days I choose to go or the score, I stay right until the end.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Lisa's Corner: Don’t fight, but embrace nature

By Lisa Goudy

"No beast has ever conquered the earth; and the natural world has never been conquered by muscular force." - Liberty Hyde Bailey, American scientist

There’s nothing that lights up social media quite the way storms do.

Take Twitter, for instance. The hashtag #skstorm is usually about as active as the weather.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Lisa's Corner: New diverse characters needed in comics

By Lisa Goudy

Strong characters are fundamental to a strong story.

This is true in any kind of storytelling. The more interesting a person or character is, the more substance a story will have and the more interest it will generate. Regardless of sexual orientation or ethnicity, as long as the characters and stories are compelling with substance, the better and more engaging the result will be.

In the comic industry, we’ve started to see a trend of more diverse characters in comics, but what we don’t see is new diverse comic characters as much. That needs to change.
For years, many of the most famous and prominent heroes were straight white males such as Superman, Captain America, Batman and Spider-Man. In an attempt to bring more diversity to comics, we’ve seen many comic publishers – including Marvel and DC – introduce more leading female, LGBTQ+ and multicultural characters and this is a good thing.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Lisa's Corner: Plan needed to address wage gap issue

By Lisa Goudy

Scarlet Johansson made history last week.

As of last week, Johansson is one of the Top 10 highest grossing actors. This is the first time a woman has ever entered the Top 10. Johansson has starred in many films, most prominently in five Marvel Studios’ blockbusters as Black Widow. There is no doubt in my mind that this is what helped her make this list that includes names such as Robert Downey Jr., Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp. She’s also the youngest actor of any gender to appear in the Top 30 of the list, which is available on the Box Office Mojo website.

For me, the biggest reason why this news is important is the step it makes in the direction of equality. She has broken a ceiling in terms of wages. Unfortunately, though, the wage gap is still very much an issue in 2016, even here in Canada, and it needs to be addressed.
