Reducing police anxiety can also reduce post-traumatic stress disorders in police officers.

"Police have to take better care of themselves," said Dr. John Violanti, an expert in police-related suicide from New York. "Police officers have a considerable risk of suicide, above that of the general population."

Research indicates that police officers have a 69 per cent higher risk of suicide than regular members of the public.

Violanti was one of the keynote speakers at the Heritage Inn on Thursday during the first day of the two-day inaugural Saskatchewan Police Officer Wellness Conference put on the Moose Jaw Police Association, the Moose Jaw Police Service and the Saskatchewan Federation of Police Officers.
