The first application to a police service that Branden Hoggins submitted was for the Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS) a few years ago.

When he saw the new opening come up in mid-2015, he applied again. This time, however, he was successful. On Monday, he was one of two new police officers sworn in with the MJPS. Hoggins and Adam Strube are now constables with the MJPS.


"It's a little bit surreal, I think. It's been a long time coming," said Hoggins.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Grease fire displaces family

Over the weekend, a fire caused between $10,000 and $20,000 to a home on the 1000 block of Prince Charles Place.

"It was a grease fire on the stove. It started during cooking supper," said Rod Klippenstein, fire prevention officer with the Moose Jaw Fire Department.

For the first time in recent history, the City of Moose Jaw has initiated a multi-year cast iron water main replacement program.

The purpose of the program is to "improve and rebuild" the city's infrastructure, said Mayor Deb Higgins.

"It is the largest infrastructure program that the City of Moose Jaw has ever undertaken when you look at the size and scale and scope of it," said Higgins, "but it's something long past due and people realize that it is long past due and it's time that we got at it."

A long time ago in a galaxy not so far away, there was an awakening of the Force.

This awakening stormed its way into theatres around Earth, earning $1 billion around the globe in less than two weeks, but it also invaded 15 IMAX theatres on the planet. Parts of it were filmed with IMAX cameras, making IMAX 2D the optimal viewing that J.J. Abrams and crew - deliverers of the Force - wanted everyone to see.

The Kramer IMAX theatre at the Saskatchewan Science Centre in Regina is one of those 15 IMAX theatres in the world that are showing 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens.'

Choosing a highlight for Moose Jaw for 2015 was easy for Mayor Deb Higgins.

"Overall, the highlight of the year, I think for the community as a whole was the opening of the new Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital. The community really got behind the idea of a new hospital and realized the need for it," she said.

"So it was really nice to have the grand opening and to have it as a big part of our community moving forward."

From a city perspective, Higgins said 2015 highlights included the cast iron water main replacement program.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Year in Review: The road to hyperbaric victory

It was a long journey for the hyperbaric chamber to be included in the new hospital.

In 2013, the Government of Saskatchewan announced that the hyperbaric chamber would not be included in the new hospital. This, said Premier Brad Wall, was based on a recommendation from the Five Hills Health Region (FHHR) based on numbers that indicated it wasn't being used often enough. The FHHR stated that 196 treatments were given to 18 patients in 2014.

This decision didn't rest well with many Moose Jaw and area residents. The chamber, used to treat carbon monoxide patients and burn wounds, is the only chamber between Edmonton and Toronto.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Year in Review: New state-of-the-art hospital opens in Moose Jaw

After years of planning, hard work and generosity, Moose Jaw's new hospital had its grand opening on Nov. 6.

The Government of Saskatchewan first announced that Moose Jaw would be home to a state-of-the-art hospital on Aug. 30, 2011 to replace the aged Moose Jaw Union Hospital. The hospital project was initially announced in 2009.

At a cost of $100 million, the hospital features private rooms and private washrooms in single-patient rooms. Treatment rooms have two doors, one for nurses and doctors and another for visitors. There is also a special mental health wing in the hospital. It will also be home to an MRI machine and a hyperbaric chamber in January 2016.
