Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Lots of ogre fun to be had in Shrek the Musical

Big, green ogres are always full of fun. That is especially the case if the ogre’s name is Shrek.
The nearly sold-out Saturday afternoon performance of RuBarb Production’s Shrek the Musical at the Mae Wilson Theatre at the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre was filled with laughs, tapping toes and fun for the whole family. By the end of the production the audience gave the cast a standing ovation and little boys and girls started dancing to the final number.
Rubarb Production Inc.’s version of the Broadway musical by DreamWorks Theatrical and Neal Street Productions has a solid cast presence with strong vocal and emotional performances. The musical is based off the DreamWorks Animation film Shrek and the book of the same name by William Steig.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Sand castle fun in rainy weather

A clamshell sat on top of the sand castle as king. A seaweed maze led up to the castle entrance with a net on a pole in the ground to symbolize the country flag, which was Canada.
“This is to mark our territory and that’s our drawbridge,” explained Justin Froehlich, one of the three castle builders. “This is our dirt bike rally. It’s not much of a dirt bike rally thought. This is a guy going on the ramp.”
“And this is our moat. We just put seaweed in it so that we could pour water in,” added Justin’s cousin Ethan Gross, who also designed the seaweed maze. “(Royalty has) a secret password that they can just go straight through (the maze).”
Along with Keenan Gross, the three cousins were the only ones who came out in the rainy weather Saturday morning for a sand building contest at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park.

Bill Kruse doesn’t usually use art to make political statements.
However, for one of his pieces on display in the Moose Jaw Art Guild’s exhibition at the Mosaic Gallery at the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre (MJCC), he made an exception in his piece, VVC (Valley View Centre) Matters.
“Basically I took a colour photo, turned it into black and white, (but) didn’t like it. So I turned it into a chocolate brown photo,” said Kruse. “It’s all about the sign but yet no Valley View. It’s the road to Valley View and how it’s disappearing.
“They’re taking Valley View away so that’s why I called it VVC Matters because I guess I’m against it.”
The official opening of the exhibit took place on Saturday. There are 18 members’ art represented in this year’s exhibition. It will be on display until Sept. 7.

The Butler family name has become a community staple. Having gone from a home business in Moose Jaw to having a dominant international presence, Fifth Avenue Collection will be celebrating its 25th anniversary milestone from Sept. 5 to 7. Many members of the Butler family play important roles in the established jewelry company.
“It was a hobby in our basement. That’s where it came from,” said Betty Butler, co-founder of the company. “There is myself and my husband, our children and some of their children. So it’s three generations …
“We work as a family and it is just a lot of fun with a great product and a happy journey for sure.”

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Fee-for-service health care centre to open in Moose Jaw
Alliance Wellness and Rehabilitation health care clinic will open Monday

A new type of health care clinic will open in Moose Jaw on Monday.
Alliance Wellness and Rehabilitation is located in the basement of the Co-Op Marketplace, 500-First Ave. N.W. It is not affiliated with the Five Hills Health Region or any other health region.
“It’s a multidisciplinary clinic, which is something that’s new,” said president Mark Lemstra, who was born in Moose Jaw. “So it’s combining all the allied health care practitioners … Basically everything that a family doctor doesn’t do, we do everything else.”
Lemstra was raised in Gravelbourg and has lived in Moose Jaw before. He said the services include physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise therapy, psychology, home care nursing and home care nursing assistant. He added there would also be a registered dietician and a pharmacy review.

Moose Jaw Public Library to celebrate its centennial

On Aug. 15, 1913, the Moose Jaw Public Library (MJPL) had its official opening.
Exactly 100 years later, the library, which is in the same location, is celebrating its centennial.
“It’s a beautiful building. Everybody that you talk to from other parts of Saskatchewan always says, ‘Oh yeah, you’ve got that gorgeous library,’” said Laura Shtern, assistant librarian at the MJPL. It’s just such a wonderful treasure for the city to have this beautiful library building.”
On Thursday the library will hold all-day festivities to celebrate the centennial. At 11 a.m. there will be a heritage building tour, a children’s concert with Lee and Sandy Paley and a teen photo scavenger hunt.
