Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Hospital foundation, new apartments among June building permits

The largest building permit issued in June was for the new hospital.

The Five Hills Health Region (FHHR) received a $12,500-permit for the foundation of the $2.5-million hospital located at 55 Diefenbaker Drive.

The second highest permit at a value of $4,750 is for the construction of a six-unit rental apartment on the 800 block of Caribou Street West for $950,000.

Those were two of 47 permits issued in June worth $8.45 million. In June 2012 the city issued 50 permits worth $11.40 million.

Joanne Klassen couldn’t be happier with Sidewalk Days so far.

“It’s been one of the better Sidewalk Days that we’ve had,” she said. “Last year was fantastic but this is equally as good if not better.”

Friday was the second day of the annual festival spanning nine blocks on Main Street. The festival will close down at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Klassen, one of the owners of the family business Klassen Graphics, said a lot of people stopped by the booth.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: SIAST workshop will teach teens about video game programming

Teenagers have the chance to learn about making video games.

On July 10 to 12 SIAST Palliser Campus in Moose Jaw is hosting its third annual Plan, Program, Play computer game programming interactive workshop.

“We find that kids with an interest in video gaming seem to have a natural talent for programming,” said Gavin Osborne, instructor in the SIAST business information systems programming, “So we’re trying to get them interested in information technology and programming by turning their hobby into something that they can eventually leverage into a profession and show them how we teach that kind of stuff at SIAST.”

Looking down Main Street, it’s a totally different sight than normal.

Sidewalk Days 2013 is off to a great start again this year. I had a lot of fun at last year’s festival. I liked listening to and watching various forms of entertainment. I loved the food and I enjoyed looking at all of the vendors and displays set up on Main Street.

This year’s festival, which began Thursday and ends at 7 p.m. on Saturday, features food, face painting and other entertainment.

Once again members of 15 Wing put on an air show on Thursday afternoon over downtown Moose Jaw and were available to the public for autographs following the show.

Bryan Van Tassel says city should act and not let water levels drop

Bryan Van Tassel remembers when there was a beach by the Moose Jaw River.

“My mom used to take me down there. There was a beach down there. There would be 300 people down there. It’s a marsh now,” said Van Tassel. “Somehow it is part of our heritage. We give old buildings better respect than we give the Moose Jaw River and there’s native history here. Tribes used to come here to meet in the wintertime.”

The owner of Boh’s Cycle and Sporting Goods said councillors haven’t shown enough care for the CPR dam and have allowed levels to drop.

Replacement mural and new stock growers mural to be painted this summer

The murals committee is busy with two murals this summer.

Norma Westgard, chair of the murals committee, said the first mural is a replacement mural on the SaskTel building and the second is a new mural on the east wall of the Ashdown's Furniture and Interiors building.   building. Assuming the weather co-operates, local artist Grant McLaughlin will start painting the replacement mural this weekend.

“There’s something about that wall that makes paint chip and peel so it’s something that has to be repaired every year. So we are replacing it,” said Westgard.

A Silver Star Salvage program donates recycled metal appliances to charity.

“We make a donation once a month. We take 10 per cent of everything we get from our bin and we make a donation to whoever,” said owner Cal Anderson. “We go by weight and that’s how we donate to charities.”
