Executive committee refers proposal for further review

Moose Jaw might get a bicycle skills park.

“Anything that will encourage people of all ages and especially young people to get more active … is a great thing,” said Jim Large, cyclist and president of the Moose Jaw Pavers Road and Mountain Bike Club. “From what I know of the project with the city police union offering to foot some of the costs and do a lot of the work, I think it’s fantastic.”

Cpl. Taylor Mickleborough, president of the Moose Jaw Police Association, made the association’s proposal for Saskatchewan’s first-ever bicycle skills park before executive committee at Monday’s meeting.

The association’s request is for the city to donate a minimum of one-acre of land for the park, preferably at the field west of YaraCentre on High Street West. That would be a size comparable to a soccer field. The request also includes a request for the city to secure sources of clean fill dirt and take over management of the park when it is complete.

Saskatchewan BPs donating funds from sales on June 26

Boston Pizzas in Saskatchewan are raising funds to send disabled kids to summer camp.

In a three-year partnership with the Saskatchewan Abilities Council, June 26 will be the first annual Boston Pizza Day for Camp Easter Seal. Gerry Ann Fraser, volunteer and wife of Boston Pizza franchisee Earl Fraser in Yorkton, said the 18 Boston Pizzas in 11 communities in Saskatchewan, including the two in Moose Jaw, will donate 10 per cent of sales on June 26 to support the camp.

“All of the funding for Camp Easter Seal is on a donation basis,” said Fraser. “Camp Easter Seal is the only wheelchair accessible facility in Saskatchewan and kids can come to Camp Easter Seal from all corners of the province.”

Rainfall positive for many area farmers

It’s going to be a cloudy weekend.

“Expect a pretty cloudy weekend and then for the clouds to clear up a little bit starting next week,” said Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist John Paul Cragg. “The big rainfall for Moose Jaw (was Friday) going into the weekend.”

He said there is a 60 per cent chance of rain on Saturday and a 30 per cent chance of rain on Sunday.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Council severs city manager's contract

Mayor says decision was “without cause”

Garry McKay said he’ll miss co-workers and working with the community.

On Friday the city announced that council decided to sever city manager McKay’s contract with the city. After almost 38 years with the city, his last day of work was on Thursday.

“Initially I was surprised. I got notified early (Thursday) morning,” said McKay, who will be 60 years old in December. “I didn’t see it coming but … I’m not leaving bitter, absolutely not. I had an employment contract and I signed the contract and council chose to exercise that and that’s their right.”

He said in August he would’ve been with the city for 38 years, 11 of which were spent as city manager. He said he would need time to “digest this.”

Giving back to the community is an admirable thing to do.

Moose Jaw has always been known for its giving spirit. Examples of this are easily spotted at fundraisers or other charity events.

But it’s also good to see instances where some people give back to the community for no other reason than giving back. I think seeing or hearing about those many people can help inspire us to do more and to appreciate all the hard work so many people do.

For instance, Telus has a program called Give Where We Live.

It encourages people to give back to the community by volunteering in various ways. Telus and Free the Children launched a partnership under the same program earlier this year to get youth involved in giving back as well.

A Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) and city program will recycle rainwater.

Members of the RBC branch on High Street presented environment advisory committee chairperson Don McKenzie with a $10,000 cheque on Thursday to support the residential rainwater harvesting and conservation program.

“Really what this does is falls under the RBC blue water project in order to protect our fresh water,” said Peter Hleck, RBC branch manager. “This will help (the city’s) initiative.”
