The Saskatchewan NDP has a new interim leader and for the first time, that leader is a woman.

Nicole Sarauer, MLA for Regina Douglas Park, was elected interim leader of the party Tuesday night, effective immediately.

“I’m honoured to have been chosen by caucus and council to lead the party. It’s important work and it’s exciting work,” she said on Wednesday. “I think I’m one in a line of hopefully many other women who will follow in my footsteps, I suppose. If one young woman sees this and sees me in this space and in this role and sees it then as a potential career opportunity for her, I think that’s a very good thing.”
