Labels, no matter how harmless they appear to be, are a waste of time.

Terms like jock, geek, goth, cheerleader, nerd or loner are a few examples. This type of classification is, sadly, used quite commonly in our society.

If someone labels someone else as any of those stereotypes as a way to categorize them, it can be hurtful to the person you’re labeling. Everyone is more than just one thing. For instance, it’s OK for a so-called jock to love music.

In the book Divergent by Veronica Roth, an example of extreme categorization gone wrong, a character states, “We’ve all started to put down the virtues of the other factions in the process of bolstering our own.  I don’t want to do that. I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and honest.”
