The environment advisory committee report caused quite a stir at Monday’s council meeting.

Only one item required council approval in the minutes – the proposed 2015 budget allocations for the solid waste 2015 recycling initiatives. The proposed 2015 expenditures were $52,500. The fund has been in place for at least a decade.

“It’s a fund generated from the landfill, which was dedicated to promote more waste reduction through recycling initiatives. That was the broad purpose,” Coun. Don Mitchell told the Times-Herald this week.

Daniel Holzer is the lucky recipient of the 2014 Dubinsky Family Scholarship.

“Daniel was selected from a very stellar group of candidates from Moose Jaw area schools,” said Mayor Deb Higgins. “You’re a great example of what all the people in the City of Moose Jaw can accomplish.”

Those words were spoken just moments before she presented him with the scholarship at Monday’s council meeting.

All Palliser Regional Libraries now have free access to wireless Internet.

“It will be expanding province-wide, but we were the test site,” said Jan Smith, director of the Palliser Regional Library.

I have to applaud Benedict Cumberbatch for being traditional.


On Wednesday, the 38-year-old actor announced his engagement in the announcements section of The Times. The announcement was simple: With a headline of Mr. B.T. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter, it reads: “The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katherine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London.”

I am pleased to see that Cumberbatch went the traditional route. The announcement didn’t appear on Facebook or Twitter or any social media site. In fact, he doesn’t even have any form of social media account.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: A “desperate” budget for Palliser Regional Library

The Palliser Regional Library is in dire need of money.

“Our budget is pretty desperate," said Jan Smith, director of the Palliser Regional Library. "We’ve had to cut out $44,000. We’ve lost 37 staff hours at headquarters. We’ve lost one full position and we’ve lost one day courier.

“Our salaries are going up, power’s going up, heat’s going up – everything’s going up. We’re cut to the bone and this year we’re bleeding.”

It started as the city manager’s quarterly report. It morphed into a discussion on budgeting processes and council’s mandate.

At Monday’s council meeting, Coun. Brian Swanson noted one of the department highlights with the Saskatchewan City Mayors’ Caucus and the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA). In the report comments it states that the department was working with “other cities to establish objectives for growth, assessment, taxation…”

The Moose Jaw Public Library board is requesting a materials budget increase for 2015.

The materials budget, which is part of the Palliser Regional Library levy, needs to increase by 2.7 per cent to $6,727 to keep up with inflation. The figure is calculated using the Consumer Price Index statistics for the province related to education and reading.

With the increase, the library will be able to maintain the level of expenses seen in 2014.
