Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Gov't debt should be avoided, Taxpayers Federation says

Prairie Director says municipalities should trim spending rather than borrow money

Todd MacKay believes governments should handle their budgets like families do when things get tough.

"When families face these kind of pressures, they look at the things they're spending money on. They decide whether it's really worth it or not and they trim back," said MacKay, Prairie Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation who resides in Moose Jaw.

"We hardly ever see governments do that, very rarely, but what they really need to do is go through their budget line by line, find places where they can trim back a little bit and use that money for high priorities like fixing and building roads, keeping our streets safe, those kind of things."

In the City of Moose Jaw's capital budget estimates, there are a proposed $259.09 million in capital expenses over the next five years.
