More than 20 local organizations among beneficiaries

The provincial government recently announced
that it has provided more than $2 million in gaming grants to more than
900 organizations.
Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA Greg Lawrence said the grants are given out quarterly to charitable or religious organizations licensed
by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) to do bingo, break-open ticket sales, raffles, Texas Hold ‘em Poker
and Monte Carlo or mock casino events.

Moose Jaw Warriors lead students in physical activities

Some local kids had the chance to work out with the Warriors on Wednesday.
Six members of the Moose Jaw Warriors led a Warriors Workout with the students in grades 4 to 8 at William Grayson Elementary School.
“With their iPads or their video games now, (kids) don’t necessarily know how to be active other than what they see in sports and stuff like that,” said Warriors captain Sam Fioretti.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: New HIV cases declining, but more education needed

Provincial HIV numbers are declining, but there is more work to do, according to provincial health officials.
“I think we’ve done some education of the public, but I don’t think we’ve done enough,” said HIV provincial leadership team medical health officer Dr. Johnmark Opondo. “We have several studies done in Saskatchewan, which still show that we still have pockets of the province where people are not very aware of the HIV situation and the concern that we have.”

Two Moose Jaw girls receive Conservatory Canada medals and scholarship

Two Moose Jaw girls have received top music honours from Conservatory Canada.
Alicia Zarubin, 9, and Sarah Closs, 10, achieved the highest marks in Saskatchewan from their conservatory voice exams and will each receive a Medal of Excellence.
They also were awarded the Lillian and Don Wright National Voice Travel and Study Scholarship and will travel to London, Ont., this weekend for workshops and to receive their medals. Only 10 students from across Canada were selected.

There are some new restrictions on hunting and angling licenses, as a result of the province's recent amendments to The Enforcement of Maintenance Orders Act.
“We’ve introduced changes to support the enforcement of child support payments through the restriction of angling and hunting licenses,” said Gordon Wyant, provincial justice minister and attorney general.

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Suspected case of measles in the FHHR (UPDATED)

On Friday, the Five Hills Health Region reported a suspected case of measles in a young adult.
Following a recent outbreak of measles in Alberta, those cases and the suspected FHHR are linked to recent visits to or from the Netherlands. FHHR medical health officer Dr. Mark Vooght said there have been a “number of cases in the last few weeks” in the Lethbridge, Coaldale and Fort McLeod area in southern Alberta.
He added additional information on the suspected case in the FHHR is not available, but it was related to travel and the adult has a “relatively mild disease, but has recovered well.”
“The measles is always a concern to public health folks,” said Vooght.

On Thursday, supporters of Wakamow Valley will enjoy tasting wine and specialty foods — all to raise money for new washrooms.
The 10th annual Festival of Flavours will take place on Thursday at the Heritage Inn, 6-10 p.m., and will feature a number of sampling stations. All proceeds will support upgrading washrooms in Wakamow Valley that will cost $50,000.
“We know it’s not as sexy or as cool as some of the other items we’ve done in the past, but it’s totally essential for the park. Last year, our focus was on an accessible playground,” said Crystal Froese, director of community relations for Wakamow Valley.
