What started as bringing lettuce to the
food bank turned into quite the story for Kendra Shelemy.
“On average, (the food bank) probably gets
between 10 and 20 families coming in there every day. So that grocery bag
pretty much fills two hampers. Needless to say we had to run back to the farm,”
said Shelemy, community co-ordinator at the Mosaic Community Food Farm.
“We
brought four cardboard boxes full of lettuce back, which lasts roughly two
days. As much as we’re thrilled with how well the garden is doing, the amount
of fresh fruits and vegetables for the food bank – even with the garden here – is still getting is not enough to meet the
demands of the families that are coming in.”
