Harvest is well in progress and winter wheat is doing better than normal.

“Winter wheat is being combined with some very big yields,” said Brent Flaten, integrated pest management specialist at the Moose Jaw office of the provincial ministry of agriculture. “Generally crops are progressing well. There’s some lentils being harvested and peas are starting to be harvested as well.”

Bevon Clark is on vacation, but made a point of coming to donate blood.

“I can do this. This is something I can do to help out,” said Clark, who is from Herbert. “(I donate blood) every time I can, every 56 days. I was eligible (Monday).”

“The need for blood never takes a holiday. It’s a constant demand that’s there. Even though we need to take our holidays, the need for blood doesn’t. It’s the time of year when a lot of people might get out of their regular habits and their standard of donating on a regular basis and might forget about it because you’re heading out to the lake or whatever, which is fantastic. We just ask that if people have the opportunity and the chance that they remember us when we are in town," said James Topinka, community development co-ordinator with Canadian Blood Services.

Emergency service personnel compete in Sirens for Life

Moose Jaw Police Service Sgt. Cliff Froehlich hopes his department will win the Sirens for Life challenge this year.

“Hopefully we’ll come out on top this year,” said Froehlich. “We are hoping to do better.”

Sirens for Life is a competition between local emergency agencies (police, fire and EMS), in which each organization tries to donate the most blood in a given month.

Froehlich said he and the personnel were at Tuesday's Canada Blood Services donation clinic at Moose Jaw Exhibition Grounds to promote the importance of giving blood.

“Last year it kind of rekindled my interest in blood donation, again with the emergency services challenge. It just brought it to the forefront for me,” said Froehlich. “In the summertime here with the travel and the chance of injuries, serious injuries and stuff like that it’s just very important that people keep this in mind.”

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Local teens help build houses in the Dominican Republic

After spending a month in the Dominican Republic building houses, Steven Martyniuk and Brooke Williamson couldn’t have learned more.

“It was so amazing to see a different part of the world, to see how pretty much the majority of the world has to live,” said Martyniuk, 18. “(We) learned so much about different cultures and different personalities and different leadership skills. I’ve never learned more in my life.”

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: First human case of West Nile reported in Saskatchewan

It’s prime time for the possibility of West Nile virus in southern Saskatchewan.


The Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region (RQHR) reported the first human case of West Nile virus on Friday. The Five Hills Health Region (FHHR) hasn’t found any people, mosquitoes or birds with West Nile in the area yet.


But FHHR medical health officer Dr. Mark Vooght said that doesn’t mean the risks aren’t still there.

Private businesses are concerned for mall traffic when Zellers closes next year.


“I think it’s awful because I mean, we’re going to lose a lot of people,” said Julie Seip, owner of Inessense at the Town 'n' Country Mall. “Basically because they have the clothing. They have the shoes … People are automatically going to go to Wal-Mart and that’s going to draw a lot of people out of the mall.”

starting price for school supplies at Staples is close to $200.

Sending kids back to school isn’t cheap.


For a student heading into Grade 6/7 at Lindale School, the school supplies list provided at Staples Business Depot is, at the very minimum in pricing, a total of $194.99. That excludes the price for non-marking gym shoes and physical education clothing (shorts, t-shirt, sweatpants).

 Annual school supplies drive looking for items


The Moose Jaw Times-Herald and Staples Business Depot are partnering again to collect items for the School Supply Drive. The supplies will go to the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division and the Prairie South School Division to students who may have trouble affording the items. 


Items can be dropped off at the Times-Herald at 44 Fairford Street West or Staples at 451 Thatcher Drive East.
