As a policeman, Ernie Louttit has always had great stories to tell.

After spending eight years as a soldier with the Canadian Armed Forces and 27 years with the Saskatoon city police, he's seen things most people never do.

"It's one of those unique jobs where you get a look at people's lives that not a whole lot of other people get to see it in that kind of detail - see people at their best, see people at their worst," said Louttit. "I loved being a cop, but now I love not being a police officer. It's like I've kind of come out of the woods, but I don't regret it. It was rewarding. I met a lot of good people over the years."

Louttit joined the Canadian Armed Forces at age 17 and retired from the Saskatoon Police Service at age 52 in October 2013. He was the third aboriginal person on the force. Even while he was still a member of the police force - a "keeper of secrets" as part of the job, he said - he used to teach by telling stories.
