Heat has helped crops, but now moisture is needed

Despite the lack of rain, crops are doing better in Saskatchewan than they were at this time last year.
“We are well ahead of where we were last year. For the most part, the majority of crops are under normal stages of development,”
said Shannon Friesen, regional crops specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, based in Moose Jaw. “Some of the crops that
are in the drier areas have actually prematurely flowered or headed out and in some cases, they may be only a foot tall as
well.”
In total, 63 per cent of fall cereals, 58 per cent of spring cereals, 52 per cent of oilseeds and 59 per cent of pulse crops
are at normal stages of development.
