Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Contest and "Read In" to increase literacy

Only 58 per cent of Canadians have adequate literacy skills.

“There’s a lot of people that have to use coping mechanisms to survive,” said Michele Smith, Moose Jaw Literacy Network co-ordinator. “(In) a recent literacy evaluation (that included) 24 countries and it included people ages 16 and up, our 16 to 24 year olds are not at the national average. We’ve got a lot of work to do, so it’s really important that we focus on literacy activities.”

Along with the Moose Jaw Public Library, the literacy network hopes to change those numbers for the better.
