Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Lisa's Corner: Keeping poetry alive during poetry month

April is National Poetry Month.

Ever since 1996 the United States has celebrated it, and Canada has celebrated the month since 1999. Designed to highlight poetry and to encourage others to write or read poetry, many places celebrate or mark National Poetry Month in different ways. For instance, last year in Moose Jaw, local poet Robert Currie read a poem to council in commemoration of it.

I think poetry is something many people can enjoy, but that doesn’t mean all types of poetry are for everyone. Poetry, like any other type of writing, is a way to express yourself in ways you might not otherwise know how. Having a designated poetry month to try and keep the art form alive is great.

Sometimes poetry helps us cope with issues we can’t find another way to address. Sometimes poetry is a way to pour out feelings we have, or that we’re not aware of, and sometimes it’s just good fun. It really depends on the individual.
