Brain injury survivor shares her story at council

When a school bus drive ran a yield sign, causing the bus to collide with a CPR truck, it changed everything for Emilia Becker.

“We rolled into the opposite ditch and although my brothers and other children were on the bus, I was the most seriously injured of the children,” she said. “I was first diagnosed with a concussion, but we later discovered I had a diffuse axonal injury, which is where the hemispheres of the brain twist and the injury scatters throughout.”

The date was Oct. 17, 2006 and it happened near Regina. At the time of the incident, Becker was 11 years old.
