Garrett Hippy is pedalling across Canada to Ottawa to raise awareness for direct democracy.
“In a nutshell, it basically means that we not
only vote on our leaders or candidates for leaders, but we also vote on
the issues,” said the cyclist who began his journey in Nelson, B.C. “So
laws don’t get passed until they’re approved by the citizens through
the use of referenda.”

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Pull to the right and stop for emergency vehicles
When drivers see lights or hear sirens on emergency vehicles, they must pull over to the right and stop. Times-Herald photo by Lisa Goudy |
When a driver hears a siren or sees the lights of an emergency response vehicle, it’s imperative to get out of the way.
“It slows down our response time of the police, fire (and) EMS,” said Sgt. Terry Phillips with the Moose Jaw Police Service. “Obviously if we’re going lights and siren, there’s a reason for that and if people aren’t pulling over and (are) slowing us down, that can cause a certain impact and, worse case scenario, it can cause accidents.”

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Lisa's Corner: The Olympic Games have an important message of unity
Today is the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Lasting until Aug. 12, the Games are a way to unify the globe regardless of our differences — and that’s something we could use a lot more of in these times.
The Olympic symbol — the five interlocking rings coloured, blue, yellow, black, green and red — is a representation of the union of the continents and the athletes at the Games. That symbolism is not only powerful, but needed when we hear so much about all of the trials and tribulations of the world and the pain and suffering on every side.

Jim Purdy will never forget a spiritual moment he experienced at St. Anthony’s Home.
At the centennial celebration on Saturday of the building that is now Chateau St. Michael, Purdy said he had many memories when he worked as a maintenance staff member at St. Anthony’s Home from 1984 to 1990. While Chateau St. Michael is only 13 years old, part of the building was built in 1912.
Purdy said a manger was set up every Christmas on the grounds of the home. It was the responsibility of whoever was working the afternoon shift to put the baby Jesus in the manger at midnight.
“The night that I had to do it, it was the most miserable storm that you could imagine. (It was) just terrible and windy and you could barely even see out to the manger,” said Purdy. “I opened the door and I had the Baby Jesus in my arms and I stepped out the door and the wind stopped. I walked out, put the Baby Jesus in the manger and it was calm.”
“That will be with me forever. That’s my special moment,” he said. “Mother Nature … accommodated a spiritual event and here, more than that: a historical event.”

Moose Jaw Times-Herald: Humane Society hosts car bashing fundraiser
By Lisa Goudy
People will have the chance to pick up a sledgehammer and whack a vehicle into oblivion for a good cause.
The Moose Jaw Humane Society will have its second annual TAILgate party at the Moose Jaw Car Show and Shine in Happy Valley Park between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on July 21.
For $5, people can make three hits on the car donated by Silver Star Salvage. All proceeds will go towards the care of the animals at the local shelter.
“It’s just a really fun summer fundraiser,” said Karla Pratt, fundraising and promotions co-ordinator at the Moose Jaw Humane Society. “With summer holidays, a lot of people are away and a lot of our regular volunteers aren’t around, but there are a couple of us that can show up to the shelter and just sit there. It’s really easy to run and there’s virtually no cost to us either.”
